Introducing Hale & Hearty

Have you ever wanted to get ideas for activities near where you live? See where and when local clubs meet? Wanted to know the best places to go for a walk in your area?

These are the types of questions, amongst others, that we plan to address with our “Hale & Hearty” knowledge base, which will provide maps, graphs and information on health and wellbeing.

This EU-funded project’s aim is to improve access to health and wellbeing information.  The project is managed by the Open Data Unit in the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform (DPER) and project partners are:

  • Central Statistics Office
  • Department of Health
  • Fingal County Council
  • Derilinx
  • Ireland’s Data Cloud Cluster (IDCC)

The outcome of the project will be a “knowledge base” for health and wellbeing information, and an app, that will demonstrate potential uses for the knowledge base.

So far, we have concentrated on working out who will be using our app and knowledge base.

We’ve run surveys and interviews to help determine who will use the information we provide, what data we need to provide and how we should provide it.

We’ve decided to focus on the following “personas” who will represent our typical users:

Image of a family of 3 generations
Three generations of the Murphy family

The Murphy family want to access local information that will help them plan for their recreational activities. They have a very busy schedule ferrying childing to sports, social events and play dates. They care for an elderly relative at home and bring her to age action social events and hospital appointments.

They also want to discover what community activities are on their doorstep.

“We want access to local event and sports information in real-time. We would like alerts of what’s going on in the area for teens and for the older community”.

Mario: a technically advanced user

Mario wants to access data of generally high quality for his research, however if the data is of lower quality that is ok if flagged at the point of access. He is interested in detailed data from nationally representative surveys, and more regular data updates concerning health behaviours, health outcomes, service demand and usage and epidemiological information

I want to receive regular updates on data of interest. Monthly updates are acceptable, but weekly would be better”.

Mario is not looking for publications or visualisations, he is only interested in raw data. His role is to create the visualisations.

The next step is to design and develop the knowledge base, with our user personas in mind.
